Ingrown Hairs and Razor Bumps: How Laser Hair Removal Helps

Laser hair removal on the leg to reduce ingrown hairs and razor bumps at JSJ Aesthetics

If you’ve ever shaved your legs, your bikini line, or your face, only to wake up to red, itchy bumps a day later, you’re in good company. It’s one of the most common frustrations I hear about, from women and men alike.

And the cycle is exhausting. You shave, the bumps show up. You try a new razor, a new cream, a new technique. Maybe it helps for a week. Then they’re back, sometimes with dark marks left behind that take months to fade.

Here’s the good news: for a lot of people, the answer isn’t a better razor. It’s getting rid of the hair that’s causing the problem in the first place.

That’s where laser hair removal comes in, and it’s one of my favorite treatments to talk about because the change can be so noticeable.

Can laser hair removal help with ingrown hairs and razor bumps?

Yes. Laser hair removal targets the hair follicle, so fewer and finer hairs grow back. With less hair to shave, curl back, or get trapped under the skin, most people see far fewer ingrown hairs and razor bumps over a series of treatments.

What Actually Causes Ingrown Hairs and Razor Bumps?

An ingrown hair happens when a hair you’ve removed starts to grow back and curls into your skin instead of out of it. Your skin treats that hair like a splinter, so it gets red, swollen, and irritated.

Razor bumps are the same problem on a bigger scale. The medical name is pseudofolliculitis barbae, and it shows up as clusters of bumps wherever you shave regularly, most often the face and neck.

A few things make them more likely:

  • Shaving leaves a sharp tip. A freshly cut hair has a pointed end that can pierce the skin as it grows.
  • Pulling your skin tight while you shave lets the hair slip back under the surface.
  • Curly or coarse hair is naturally more likely to curve back into the skin.

You’re also more likely to get them if you shave often or have skin of color. Razor bumps are especially common in men with darker skin tones and curly beards, and that’s a big reason so many of my male clients come in asking about this.

Why it’s more than a cosmetic issue

Ingrown hairs aren’t just annoying. When they keep coming back, they can lead to infection (often from scratching), dark spots that linger long after the bump is gone, and even scarring.

That’s why the “just keep shaving and hope for the best” approach can backfire. Every shave restarts the cycle.

How Laser Hair Removal Breaks the Cycle

Shaving, waxing, and tweezing all deal with the hair, not the follicle it grows from. The hair comes back, and so do the bumps.

Laser hair removal works differently. The laser targets the pigment in the hair and turns that light into heat, which damages the follicle so it can’t grow hair the way it used to. Over a series of sessions, the hair that does grow back comes in finer, lighter, and much sparser.

That matters for ingrown hairs for a few reasons:

  • Less hair means fewer chances for one to get trapped.
  • Finer hair is less likely to curl back and pierce the skin.
  • You shave far less often, or not at all, so you stop creating sharp-tipped hairs and stop irritating the skin every few days.

What the research shows

This isn’t just theory. In a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, patients with stubborn razor bumps on the neck were treated with an Nd:YAG laser, the same wavelength built into the laser we use.

Ninety days later, treated areas averaged about one bump, compared with about seven in untreated areas. Those patients had darker skin types, the group most likely to struggle with razor bumps.

Many people stay smooth for months or even years after their series, and any hair that grows back tends to be finer and lighter. I always tell my clients to think of it as long-term hair reduction rather than a promise of permanent removal. Some people come back for an occasional maintenance session, and that’s completely normal.

Why your laser matters

At JSJ Aesthetics, we use the Clarity II laser by Lutronic for laser hair removal. It combines two wavelengths: Alexandrite, which works beautifully on lighter skin, and Nd:YAG, which is the safer choice for deeper skin tones.

That means we can adjust your treatment to your skin and hair instead of using one setting for everyone. It also has built-in cooling, so it’s more comfortable than most people expect.

What to Expect at JSJ Aesthetics

Your consultation.

We start by looking at your skin tone, your hair color and texture, and where your ingrown hairs show up most. From there, we build a treatment plan around you.

Your sessions.

Most people describe the feeling as a quick snap, followed by a cooling sensation. Smaller areas like the upper lip or underarms take just minutes.

Because the laser can only affect hairs in their active growth phase, you’ll need a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart. Most people need somewhere between 2 and 6, depending on the area and your hair.

Popular areas for ingrown hairs:

Before your appointment:

  • Shave the area the day before or the day of.
  • Don’t wax, pluck, or use an epilator. The laser needs the root in place to work.
  • Avoid sun, tanning, and self-tanner.

After your appointment:

  • Wear sunscreen on any treated skin that sees the sun.
  • Skip hot showers, saunas, and intense workouts for 24 hours.
  • Stick to gentle skincare while your skin settles.

One tip I always give: between sessions, shave instead of waxing or plucking. It keeps the follicle intact for your next treatment, and you’ll notice you need to shave less and less as you go.

Still dealing with dark marks left behind by old bumps? A chemical peel or Lutronic Ultra laser resurfacing can help even out your skin tone, and a solid daily skincare routine keeps it calm between visits.

Ready to Stop Fighting the Same Bumps?

If you’re tired of planning outfits around razor bumps or putting up with dark spots that never quite fade, you don’t have to keep starting over every time you shave. Laser hair removal treats the problem at the root, literally, and most people are surprised by how much calmer and smoother their skin looks after a few sessions.

My team and I would love to help you figure out if it’s right for you. We’ll look at your skin, talk through your goals, and give you a plan you can actually see results from.
